right down where i was standing, and i could see these people. and just lying there. >> there was a doctor and a nurse on the ferry at the time, who rushed to help the two injured men. the cause of that crash is still under investigation. ferry service will run as usual today. bart employees are missing so much work it's apparently costing the agency millions of dollars. according to the san francisco examiner, an average of 1 in 8 bart workers doesn't show up to work each day. train operators and station agents have the most unscheduled absences. bart has to pay other workers overtime to fill in. that costs about $14 million extra a year. starting today, bart passengers can expect some delays on sundays, because of track maintenance. the work is being done every sunday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., up until march 17th. service between the 24th street station and daly city and some transfers on the blue line will be affected. new information this morning about the murder investigation into olympic athlete oscar pistorius. south african police say they

found a bloody cricket bat in the runner's home. detectives say they believe he either used that bat to break down the door of the bathroom where his girlfriend was hiding, or it's possible she used it in self-defense. investigators say either way, they have a, quote, rock solid case against pistorius, who has denied the murder charge. his best friend called him at 4 in the morning to say there had been a terrible morning, and that he wished god would, quote, take me away. >> it's so important, it's -- even made an impact in a positive or negative way. but just maintaining integrity. >> there is now outrage over last night's airing of a reality t.v. show featuring pistorius's girlfriend reeva steenkamp. she recorded the farewell message when she was voted off the program which is a takeoff of the american show survivor. women's rights groups accused producers over exploiting the

death of the 2009-year-old model. >> i believe he would have been the next runner in south africa. it is a sad but abrupt end to a wonderful career. >> some women's groups say the show should have been delayed until after her funeral, but show producers say the program was a tribute to her legacy. a funeral is scheduled for tuesday. a candlelight vigil is also scheduled for tuesday for the san bernadino county deputy who was killed while chasing christopher dorner. deputy jeremiah mccay will be laid to rest thursday morning. dozens of people rallied outside los angeles police headquarters yesterday in support of accused killer christopher dorner. the protesters said they don't condone the killing rampage, but rather agreed with his claims of police corruption and brutality. one demonstrator said it was obviously police had no intention over bringing in dorner in alive. another big storm is hitting the north beach. video from new bedford, rhode island where up to eight inches of snow is expected to

while we have an on shore breeze that is back. the offshore breeze that brought us that warm-up thursday, friday, even yesterday felt pretty warm, now gone. if onshore breeze will be with us from here on out and that is bringing back the low clouds and the fog. i am seeing it in areas like san jose, even patchy dense fog even parts of the north bay. down the valley floor. santa rosa, petaluma, navarro all reporting visibility down to a quarter mile. take it easy out there. it is improving slowly in the next hour or so, we should seibert improvement for that patchy dense fog, but it will be with you for the early morning drive. 49 degrees right now in walnut creek. low 50s in oakland, widespread 40s to low 50s around the bay and our inland areas where we sink back into the upper 30s in some spots, now beginning to rebound as well. along the peninsula, 48 to palo alto, 48 to menlow park. mid 40s at los altos hills and as we slide south just a little bit, 48 for fremont outside your door right now, 53 at the university of san jose, sunny veil checking in right about 52. temperatures are on their way

upward. we will not be as warm as yesterday. again it's the cooling trend that will take induce tuesday when this system here drops down into california, brings us some rain and some low snow. the leading edge still several hundred miles away, but this is how it's going to play oillet over the next couple of days. waking up with the low clouds this morning, by the afternoon, mostly sunny skies. temperatures seasonal, even slightly above. so we're going to continue that for sunday afternoon. monday morning, we wake up, the low clouds, the fog back with us again. for the afternoon, the clouds are going to switch. high level clouds turning into mid level clouds, and this associated with thstorm that will be moving closer to us in the overnight hours. now into tuesday morning, here is the rain, arriving by about 10:00 or so for parts of the north bay. could wake up with a little bit of drizzle, maybe a few scattered showers. but it's through the afternoon that we will see the scattered showers and the widespread rain move through the bay area. by tuesday night, we're beginning to dry out, leaving just unsettled weather for wednesday.

to raise funds to built a permanent memorial. san francisco muni officials say a woman is in a hospital after being hit by a muni bus. that accident happened yesterday afternoon. the victim was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. the cause of the accident is still under investigation. the muni driver is undergoing standard drug and alcohol tests. two stockton teenagers died after leading the c.h.p. on a high speed chase. the highway patrol says officers started pursuing the car because it was passing vehicles using the left turn lane. that high-speed pursuit lasted about a minute and ended when the 13-year-old driver lost control, hit a light pole and crashed into a wall. both the driver and his 15-year- old passenger died. an anti jobbing antioc man is recovering after driving his brand new harley davidson motorcycle through that wall, his neighbor's home. the man told investigators he was just trying to ride that motorcycle super bowl the garage, but then the throttle got -- that motorcycle into the

garage but the throttle got stuck and it sent him and his motorcycle across the lawn through a fence into a wall. crews are now pile driving, and that means drilling at least 150 feet into the ground to secure the building. the noisy portion of the process is expected to be completed this month. the new store is scheduled to open near the richmond san rafael bridge in october. alameda county is looking to make a road connecting 580 and 680 a little safer. 93 accidents have been reported in the past four years on crow canyon road between castro valley and san ramon. one stretch of the roadway is even referred to as dead man's curve, due to the number of crashes there. the first of several public meetings, residents said speed limits need to be lowered. many also recommended installing rumble strips, more traffic light, stop signs and a center turn lane. filling up the gas tank continues to come at a high cost. according to aaa gas prices have gone up 12 cents since last weekend. the increase is again being blamed on rising oil prices.

here in california, the average price for a gallon of regular gas is 4.15. in san francisco, people are paying about 4.10 a gallon. 4.08 in san jose. in oakland the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas is 4.04 a gallon. new this morning, if obama administration says it has grave concerns that delays in filling critical government posts will affect national security. senate republicans have stalled the nomination of chicago chuck hagel for secretary of defense and john brennan for c.i.a. director. if g.o.p. won't budge until it receives answers about the benghazi consulate attack last september. the new white house chief of staff says the candidates are well-qualified and further delays could jeopardize security. the obama administration is reportedly considering landmark legislation on immigration reform. u.s.a. today obtained a draft proposal from the white house that would allow illegal immigrants to become legal permanent residents within 8 years. it is estimated that there are 11 million illegal immigrants

right now in the u.s., and under the proposal, they could apply for a newly created immigrant visa. the bill would also provide more security funding and require that businesses verify the immigration status of new hires. some bay area educators are applauding president obama's early childhood education proposal. the president wants to make preschool available to all children and expand programs such as head start. in california, officials say 125,000 four-year-olds from low income families can't afford to enroll in preschool. the president has not said how much the program would cost, but some estimate it would be between 10 and $25 billion a year. a new mortgage relief bill could face an uphill battle in congress. president obama appraised the proposal during his state of the union speech. it would help home owns with mortgages backed by fannie mae and freddie mac take advantage of low interest rates and refinance their loans. the bill is expected to get support in the democratic

controlled senate but could face an uphill battle in the republican run house. similar versions of that measure failed to pass last year. the bay area housing market is showing more signs of a strong recovery. according to the research firm data quick, home sales last month were stronger than they had been in the last six years in the bay area. the median price for a home in the bay area was $415,000. that's up more than 27% there last january. about 5500 homes were sold in the bay area last month, and that's a 3% improvement from the same time last year. well, the budget stalemate in washington could silence the blue angels. the familiar sights and sounds of the blue angels could be a thing of the past. the chronicle reports that the naval high flyers and possibly fleet week may be cancelled if automatic federal spending cuts known as sequestration kick in on march 1. san francisco mayor ed lee says an internal military e-mail warns that funding for the blue angels

lorraine blanco is live at the finish line of the chinese new year run to show us more of this san francisco tradition. lorraine. >> reporter: good morning, mike. it's the 35th annual ymca china town 5k race. you can see the art person just finished -- last person just finished about five minutes ago. they've cleared it up pretty quickly. let's show you how the race started. >> 3! 2! >> reporter: the lunar new year event attracts 1500 runners and benefits the ymc a's youth and teen programs. this year's proceed goes to its physical education program, funding free fitness, nutrition and wellness programs for more than 1000 kids in the china town area. >> it was a really great fun raider for the city. we thought it would be really great to celebrate in a unique way and make costumes. we love costumes and crafts. so we got together last night and put it together. >> reporter: that was definitely the most creative costume out here.

now 2013 is the year of the snake, and in the chinese horoscope, people born this year are great communicators, but it is believed they can also be cold and calculating. just so you know, some famous people born the year of the snake include oprah winfrey, j.f.k., abraham lincoln, picasso, mlk, jr., howard stern and kanye west. the race as we said just finished and people are partying right now in portsmouth square, of course. this one of many events here in san francisco where the year of the snake and chinese new year is the biggest in the nation. live in san francisco, lorraine blanco. people were seriously hurt after their small boat crashed right into a packed ferry. it happened at 4:30 yesterday afternoon. the ferry was heading from sausalito to san francisco with 500 people on board when the small boat slammed right into the side of it. everyone on the ferry was ok. but two men in their 60s on that small boat were rushed to the hospital.

the cause of that crash is still under investigation. ferry service will run as usual today. san francisco police are asking for your help to find a missing man. 20-year-old christian hughes flew up from san diego on february 4th to visit a friend, and he was supposed to fly home last thursday but no one has seen or heard from him in more than a week. his mother is in the bay area trying to search for him, and yesterday she passed out flyers with his friends in the bay view near the area he had been staying with a friend. >> we don't want to think that anything bad has happened, but he has been missing for a week now and we can only hope that's not the case. >> both san diego police and san francisco police are searching for hughes. he is 5' 8, weighs 130 pounds and has brown eyes and brown hair. anyone with information about him is asked to call police. oakland police are looking for suspects in two separate deadly attacks. the latest happened around 5:00 last night. the man was shot several times on eighth and peralta streets in west oakland. he was pronounced dead at the scene. hours earlier, a 22-year-old man was stabbed to death just 3

blocks from oakland police headquarters. friends and family of the petaluma teenager who died in the snow after a new year's eve concert in lake tahoe are using their story to help others. the family of 19-year-old alyssa byrne has announced they'll use the money donated to launch a public service campaign promoting a buddy system. the family says they want teens to travel in groups to stay out of danger. byrne had gone to at that although with three friends and left a music festival on her own. she was found three days later in a snowbank by a utility worker. in sub freezing temperatures, thousands of relief workers are helping victims of the russian meteor. the central russian city is being called the city of broken glass. the meteor blew out the windows to more than 40-buildings, and they estimate the blast as strong as 20 atomic bombs. >> i told them to move from the windows and not long after that the meteor exploded. they were all fine.

however when they got back to their seats a piece of glass flu above their heads. >> more than 1200 people were injured. residents say there is one positive note. they have extensive cooperation in that troubled industrial region. more than 24,000 people have mobilized to fix broken windows and distribute warm clothes and food in an area where temperatures drop to single digits overnight. the meteor caused at least $33 million in damage. new this morning, nurses at a hospital in palo alto say their safety is at risk. on-call nurses at lucille packard children's hospital say they are forced to sleep in their vehicles between assignments. they say the hospital has refused to provide beds, in violation of a union contract. but the hospital says a room is given to any nurse who requests one. one on-call nurse says her purse was stolen at gunpoint while she was sleeping in a car last month. two marin county hospitals will be taking part in pilot programs for president obama's new healthcare law. marin general plans to coordinate patient care with

the meritaj medical network. the two will be responsible for providing healthcare to 15,000 medicare patients in the north bay. know very row community hospital is also expected to perform certain surgeries for medicare patients at a set price. also new this morning, three businesses in the sonoma valley area have been cited for selling alcohol to minors. police say the businesses received the violation during an undercover sting. they include round table pizza, hot monk tavern, and debris. the department of alcoholic beverage alcohol has been note vied of the violation. facebook will be getting a huge tax refund check this year. despite earning more than $1 billion in profit in 2012, the social media giant didn't have to pay any federal or state income taxes. the company is actually going to get a refund of $429 million, thanks to a tax reduction for executive stock options. >> the employees cash in the stock options, and at that point, they have a tax deduction for the company. even though it didn't cost

facebook a nickel, the government treats it as wages, and they get a deduction for it. >> and facebook is about to get more tax breaks in the future, which total about 3 billion dollars. a north bay community might ban certain types of internet cafes. the vallejo times herald reports the city counsel nil american canyon is after businesses like freedom p.c.s. the business says it sells phone products. the city believes it's actually an internet cafe, which sells internet time that's connected to a sweep stakes where computers act as illegal slot machines. on tuesday, council members will consider a temporary ban while they review zoning rules. a pilot says gas thieves are targeting planes at san carlos airport. pilot mike debeers says a thief made off with almost $250 worth of gas last week. fortunately, debeer noticed the missing gas during a preflight check but he feels the airport needs to warn other pilots. >> a few months ago, i had a call from the airport operation. there's 8 airplanes broke into,

they took the fuel. >> debeer also says he feels that the thefts could be solved with the use of surveillance cameras. airport officials declined to comment about debeers' allegations. military aircraft intercepted a small plane that flew into a no fly zone during the president's visit to florida. officials say an f-16 and a coast guard helicopter escorted the cessna 152 out of the restricted air space and forced it to land. president obama is spending the president's day weekend with friends on florida's fresh coast. golf is expected to be a big part of the president's vacation. he is taking lessons from tiger woods' former coach butch harmon. this is video of the president playing golf in 2011. the president is practicing his technique on a private course in palm city. harmon has also played with former presidents richard nixon, gerald ford and george bush. i pretty day in store for your sunday. a live look over the berkeley

san francisco. going to be a gorgeous day to be outdoors. san jose 64, mid 60s los gatos, 65 santa cruz. even a bit above average for this time of year. the cooling trend will take us below average as early as tomorrow. the increasing clouds, we'll wake up with the morning clouds and fog once again. but the increasing clouds associated with the storm coming by late monday into tuesday morning. the rain raves, lasts all day long, and then we are unsettled with cool conditions wednesday, thursday, another chance at some rain and this pattern may last into the weekend. back to you. well, new jersey firefighters plan to build 26 playgrounds in honor of the victims of the newtown shooting massacre. the playgrounds will be built in the stat hardest hit by superstorm sandy which include new york, new jersey and connecticut. each playground will bear the name of the victim and show case things that that person loved. 20 children and 6 school employees died in the sandy hook elementary shooting rampage. the jersey shore is racing to rebuild in time for the summer tourist season.

[ applause ] >> a statue of one of the most famous romantic images in u.s. history has a new home in san diego. a 25 foot tall bronze statue of the famous times square kiss was dedicated yesterday. it is a replica of the 19 privacy life magazine photo of a service man kissing a woman while celebrating the end of world war ii. the new statue replacing a similar one that was loaned to san diego from 2007 until last year. happening right now, it's the first weekend of spring straining for our bay area baseball teams. the defending a.l. west division champs oakland a's hoping to advance even further this yore. fred ingle is hopping around all around arizona this weekend. scottsdale one day, phoenix the next. >> good morning, mike. yes, well if it's cactus, then it must be arizona. we're actually in phoenix, the oakland athletics popogo park. this is mostly their minor league area. they will just come here to practice today. it's a beautiful facility with

several ball fields and the a's were earlier this morning at the phoenix municipal stadium where they actually play their exhibition games. we had an opportunity to interview many of the players here. as you can see, also, a lot of japanese reporters and camera men. they're here for the oakland a's new short top, hero nakagima. as you can see, also, starting to bring supplies in here. this is where they will practice starting roughly 11:00. it's kind of a strange dynamic that they have here. they get dressed over at the municipal stadium. the phoenix municipal stadium which is two miles away. then they come here and practice here at popogo park. it's a beautiful facility as we said. the team, a new look for them. when we get to doing some stories here, you'll see that about 10 of the players are sporting beards. i mean full man-on beards here. including josh reddick, who's got one of those lumber jack

beards. it's a new look that the ever- changing oakland athletics is trying to start up this year. we talked to a lot of players. they all seem very optimistic. everyone talks about the anaheim angels loading up, the texas rangers. people forget, this is the american league west division champs who took the detroit tigers to five games in the american league division series last year. there is a few of the players coming out. again practice is officially starting at 11 owe5 and we'll have to move over here as more people come in to this site here. again, the oakland athletics, this is their first full teamwork-out today. it is here in phoenix. ironically, mike and claudine, the a's are actually going to leave this facility next year, and move to mesa. in the spring of 2015. it's such a beautiful place and

starting at 9:00. the prices are rising due to higher corn cost and rising department from overseas. analysts say many grocery chains are trying to keep prices down with smaller packages. that means choice cuts that have been traditionally sold in the 16 ounce package are now offered as 12 ounces for the same price. beef prices are expected to increase as much as 10% by the summer. b.m.w. is recalling nearly 570,000 vehicles to fix faulty battery cables. the recall affects 2007 to 2011. three series sedans, wagons, convertibles and coupes. also on the recall list, 2008 to 12, 1 series coupes and convertibles and the sports car. the company says faulty cables can cause the engines to stall. owners can contact their local bmw dealer with any questions. christer will is also recalling -- chrysler is also recalling 300,000 vehicles because of problems with a rear axle component that can cause drivers to lose control. the recall affects twin to 2012

ram 1500 pickups. 2009 to 2011 dodge dakotas, and 2009 aspen durango s.u.v.s. dealers will fix those problems for you and owners should be notified by chrysler. a san quinton inmate convicted in a 2006 oakland shooting is about to be released from prison. if chronicle reports prosecutors have asked a judge to free 51-year-old ronald ross after he served 123 years in prison for attempted murder. ross's attorneys say their client was the victim of bad police work, as well as a witness who lied. the district attorney's office has conceded the conviction should not stand. ross is expected to be released next week. well, san francisco city leaders say they believe a steady paycheck will encourage teenagers to leave gangs. the examiner reports the city has a jobs program for at-risk teens. and over the past 18 months, about 10 young men left gangs and started working for the city as gardeners. officials hope to add private
